UPI Payments Could Soon Use Face ID Or Phone Biometrics For Added Security

UPI payments have become the preferred digital payment method for billions of Indians. The organization managing UPI reports that transactions worth billions are happening through different apps nationwide. Soon, you can expect a major upgrade to payments that promises to be safer than current digital payment methods.

Reports this week say that the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) is discussing with companies the possibility of using biometric features on smartphones to authenticate payments.

People often lose their hard-earned money because they use a special four or six-digit PIN to approve payments. While UPI is generally secure, scammers trick people into sending money when they were actually expecting to receive it. You might have heard about the OLX scam, a fake UPI payment scam, which led platforms to add a pop-up warning people to be careful about sending money instead of receiving it.

The NPCI probably thinks that using Face ID or biometric security for UPI payments is a good idea. However, we don’t know yet when Face ID will be added to UPI apps or which apps will offer it.

You have apps like Google Pay, PhonePe, Amazon Pay, Paytm, and many others for UPI payments in the country. We hope that apps will let people choose between using a PIN or biometrics and eventually replace PINs with biometrics once the technology is reliable enough for these secure tasks.
