CRPF Officer Killed In Jammu And Kashmir's Udhampur, Counter-Terror Operation Underway
Jammu And Kashmir: Terrorists ambushed a patrol party in Jammu And Kashmir's Udhampur on August 19. A CRPF Officer was killed in an encounter with the terrorists. The attack occurred in the Dadu area of Basantgarh around 3:30 pm. The terrorists opened fire at a combined unit of CRPF and the Special Operations Group (SOG) of the Jammu and Kashmir Police. Counter-terror operations have been launched.
According to Officials, Martyr Kuldeep Singh is an inspector with the CRPF's 187th battalion. He was struck by a bullet and later died due to his injuries while being transported to the hospital. Officials reported that the terrorists faced a strong counterattack by the joint patrol team deployed at the scene and fled away. News Agency PTI reported that search operations are underway to track down the terrorists.
Jammu has experienced relative calmness in comparison to Kashmir. However, recently there has been a significant increase in terror activities in Jammu's southern Pir Panjal range, which is known to shelter terrorists with its dense forests and mountains.
Increasing Terror Threat In Jammu
Recently, Indian Army Captain Deepak Singh was killed in an encounter with the terrorists in J&K's Doda. A civilian was also reportedly injured in the attack that took place on August 14.
Defence Minister of India, Rajnath Singh assembled a high-level meeting at Delhi's South Block, in response to uprising terrorism-linked activities and attacks. NSA Ajit Doval was present in the meeting, alongside Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi.
Intelligence reports suggests high possibility of terrorists aiming Jammu and Kashmir's highways. Taking note of it, Centre deployed additional CRPF groups and local police to be on patrol on the highways and nearby areas.
Reports from the Ministry of Home Affairs states that 28 people consisting of both civilians and security personnel got killed in 11 terror activities and 24 counter-terror operations as of June 21.
New Security Measures
As per NDTV reports, the government has undertaken strategic military deployment measures with a special focus on the Kashmir Valley and the Jammu region.
Efforts by the Government include bolstering security and plugging terrorists infiltration routes. The government is also working on a 180 km border fencing project, with 70 kilometers being already covered.
Upcoming J&K Elections
Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir will take place in three phrases. The voting is scheduled for September 18 & 25 and October 1. Results will be announced on October 4.
