Close to one billion individuals worldwide face significant obstacles in proving their true identities. Without officially recognized documents, they encounter difficulties in basic tasks such as opening bank accounts, obtaining mobile phone services, traveling internationally, exercising their right to vote, or accessing essential government services. According to the World Economic Forum, an additional three billion people lack any form of identification that would enable them to participate in the increasingly vital digital economy.

Introduction of Aadhaar in 2009 in India: Then, and Now!

Aadhaar cards have revolutionized identity verification in India. Introduced in 2009, these 12-digit unique identification numbers, linked to biometric data, serve as a cornerstone for various government services and financial transactions.

With over 1.3 billion cards issued till date, Aadhaar has become an essential document for Indian citizens, facilitating access to subsidies, welfare programs, and banking services. Its integration into systems like Aadhaar-enabled payment systems (AEPS) has further promoted financial inclusion, particularly in rural areas.

This biometric-linked identification proof has witnessed widespread adoption in recent years, with integrations into taxpayers' PAN cards, provident funds, bank accounts, and various other services.

Aadhaar Boosts Financial Inclusion in the Country

Also commonly known as the Unique ID (UID), it plays a crucial role in enabling direct benefit transfers to millions of beneficiaries through government welfare schemes. This utilizes what the Centre calls the 'JAM trinity' - Jan Dhan bank accounts, Aadhaar, and mobile phones.

Aadhaar's integration into e-KYC processes and digital payment and financial platforms such as UPI, APB, AEPS, DBT, GST, e-filing of income tax returns, and e-signatures has revolutionized transparency, accountability, and digital trust in services, transactions, and payments. According to findings by Statista.com, approximately 36.9 million Aadhaar identification cards were issued in India in FY 2023.

"India's national identity documents such as the Aadhaar, PAN card, driving license and the Voter ID card, stand testimony of the government initiatives to simplify identity verification processes, by empowering its people whilst supporting financial inclusion on the nation's developmental pathway," says Vansh Jain, founder of S2F Services Pvt Ltd.

The government has also recently introduced the Blue Aadhaar card for children under five, allowing parents to acquire a digital identity without biometric data. Enrollment is simplified using demographic details and parent-linked photographs, with options like birth certificates or hospital discharge slips.

Challenges in Obtaining National Identity Documents in India? Here’s the Answer!

In India, procuring national identity documents poses several challenges. One major obstacle is the complex and time-consuming application process, often involving multiple visits to government offices and online platforms. Additionally, bureaucratic inefficiencies and lack of streamlined procedures contribute to delays in document issuance. Accessibility issues, especially in rural areas, further exacerbate the problem, with limited infrastructure hindering individuals' ability to access government services.

Mukesh Kumar, CEO and Founder of S2F Services Pvt Ltd. stresses on the importance of striking a balance between privacy and government responsibility in India's national identity discussions. He further highlights the need for strong systems to combat fraud and ensure fair access to national identity documentation services.
