Bengaluru: A bride in Bengaluru, Dr. Poorvi Bhat, has garnered online admiration for organizing a “zero-waste wedding” with her mother's assistance, honoring both their union and Mother Earth. In a video, she shared moments from her wedding and expressed gratitude towards her families for their cooperation in making her dream of an eco-friendly celebration a reality.
The mandapa was constructed from sugarcane, and food was served on banana leaves. The venue was adorned with mango and coconut leaves. The couple's wedding garlands were made exclusively of flowers and cotton threads, with no plastic attachments.

In the video, Dr. Bhat explained how her zero-waste wedding was achieved. The mantapa was made of sugarcane, which was later fed to their cows. They avoided single-use cups or plates, serving food on banana leaves and using stainless steel cutlery. The decorations included mango and coconut leaves, which require significantly less water to grow. The garlands were crafted from only flowers and cotton threads, without any plastic attachments.
She added that all the waste generated was composted on their farm after the event. Gifts were presented in jute bags, and water from hand washing was directed to the trees. Dr. Bhat emphasized their intention to celebrate their union along with Mother Earth, proudly stating that the venue was spotless by the evening.
