An Indian woman, seen drying clothes on the balcony of a luxurious hotel in Dubai, has sparked numerous comments reminiscent of a stereotypical Indian mother, along with criticism and a response from the hotel management.

Earlier this week, Pallavi Venkatesh posted a video on Instagram showing her mother hanging clothes to dry on the balcony of Atlantis, The Palm in Dubai. Captioned "Moms just momming at Palm Atlantis," the video captures Ms. Venkatesh delicately placing a pair of shorts on the balcony railing, with another balcony visible in the background also used for drying clothes in the sun.

Since its posting six days ago, the video has garnered 11.1 million views and over 900 comments. One Instagram user commented, "Moms are such cuties," while another humorously remarked, "You can take mom out of India but taking India out of mom is just impossible."

However, many criticized the act as "bad manners." Hanging clothes to dry on balconies is prohibited by authorities in Dubai, with the Dubai Municipality urging residents in 2021 not to hang laundry on balconies or windows to preserve the city's aesthetic.

One commenter informed Venkatesh that drying clothes on the balcony is illegal and could result in fines. Another questioned whether the hotel provides in-house laundry and dryer facilities. A third defended the practice, mentioning it's common in the UK as a natural way to dry clothes.

Atlantis, The Palm, a renowned five-star resort, intervened in the debate in the comments section. They praised the Indian woman for fulfilling "mom duties" while gently reminding guests that retractable drying cords are available in every bathroom for drying clothes.

"Mom duties," commented the hotel's official account with an applause emoji. They added, "We hope you enjoyed your stay! (We include a retractable drying cord in every bathroom, so that you can dry your clothing over the bath)."
