Bangladesh Unrest: Former Cricket Captain Mashrafe Mortaza's House Set Ablaze By Protestors- Watch Video

Former Bangladesh cricket captain Mashrafe Bin Mortaza's house was reportedly set on fire amid the violence and chaos following Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's resignation and departure on Monday.

Mashrafe Mortaza's Connection With Sheikh Hasina

Mashrafe Mortaza, a member of Parliament from the Narail-2 constituency in Khulna division, won his seat again as an Awami League candidate led by Sheikh Hasina in the general elections earlier this year in Bangladesh.

Bangladeshi media reported that vandals attacked and set Mashrafe Mortaza's house on fire after Sheikh Hasina, 76, left the country following large student protests.

During his cricket career, Mashrafe Mortaza captained Bangladesh in 117 matches, the most for his country. He took 390 international wickets and scored 2,955 runs in 36 Tests, 220 ODIs, and 54 T20Is.

After retiring from cricket, Mashrafe Mortaza joined Sheikh Hasina's Awami League in 2018 and was elected as an MP from the Narail-2 constituency.

The leading Bangladeshi daily, ‘Dhaka Tribune,’ reported that protesters also set fire to the District Awami League office and damaged the house of its president, Subash Chandra Bose.

Joyful crowds broke into the luxurious Ganabhaban, the Prime Minister's official residence in Dhaka, and took away furniture and TVs. One person carried a red velvet chair on his head, while another held a bunch of vases.

Hasina's flight into exile marked the end of her second 15-year term in power. She had led the country for 20 of the past 30 years, continuing the political movement started by her father, who was assassinated with his family in a 1975 coup.

Hasina left the country for her safety at her family's insistence, her son Sajeeb Wazed Joy told the BBC World Service.
