Brazil Passenger Plane Crash: A plane with 61 people crashed in Vinhedo, Sao Paulo, Brazil. The BBC reports that all passengers are dead. The airline, Voypass, had initially reported 62 people on board.

Cause Of Crash Yet To Be Known

Voypass airline stated that the plane, which was headed to Guarulhos International Airport in Sao Paulo, crashed. The plane had 57 passengers and 4 crew members on board. The cause of the accident is still unknown.

Investigation Underway, No Ground Injuries Reported

The crashed plane, registered as PS-VPB, is an ATR 72-500 that can carry up to 74 passengers. Reports say there were 62 people on board at the time of the crash.

CNN reports that flight tracking data revealed the plane began losing altitude a minute and a half before the crash. At 1:21 pm local time, the plane was at 17,000 feet. Within 10 seconds, it dropped about 250 feet. It then climbed about 400 feet in eight seconds, but soon after fell 2,000 feet. The plane then descended rapidly, dropping around 17,000 feet in just one minute before catching fire.

CNN Brazil reports that the Civil Security Department stated the plane crashed in a residential area, but no one on the ground was injured. A house was damaged. The plane, which took off from Cascavel and was heading to Sao Paulo, lost its signal at 1:30 pm local time.

Rescue Operation Underway; Medical Teams On Crash Site

Voepass airline said it has not yet determined the cause of the crash. However, the Valinhos Authority, near Vinhedo, confirmed that no one survived. A single house in a nearby condo was damaged, but no residents were hurt.

Seven teams, including army and police units, were sent to help with the plane crash rescue. The government also dispatched teams from the Legal Medical Institute (IML) to recover the bodies. Brazilian President Lula da Silva has offered condolences to the victims' families following the accident.
