Mission overview: CHAPEA mars dune alpha habitat
CHAPEA, the Crew Health and Performance Exploration Analog, constitutes the second of three planned ground-based missions. In this endeavor, a four-person volunteer crew will inhabit the Mars Dune Alpha habitat, a 3D-printed structure spanning 1,700 square feet. Located at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston, this habitat replicates the challenges of a Mars mission, including supply shortages, equipment malfunctions, communication glitches, and other environmental stressors.
Mars Mission - Tasks and challenges
The volunteer crew will engage in a variety of tasks within the habitat, simulating conditions on Mars. These activities include exercise, robotics, crop growth, habitat maintenance, and simulated spacewalks. Such simulations are crucial for testing and preparing for the hardships of actual space travel.
Mars Mission - Who can apply?
NASA is on the lookout for healthy, motivated individuals aged 30-55, who are nonsmokers and fluent in English. Applicants should be enthusiastic about new adventures and committed to supporting NASA's preparations for the first-ever human mission to Mars. Additionally, candidates must meet standard NASA criteria, including a master's degree in a STEM field, at least two years of professional STEM experience, or one thousand hours of piloting experience.
