Who is Daniel Gold? The Engineer Who Designed Israel's Iron Dome Missile Defense System

Daniel Danny Gold is an Israeli Defense Engineer, Israeli military leader born in 1962 in Tel Aviv. He completed his studies in Electronic Engineering from Technion. He has two doctoral degrees in electronic engineering and business administration from University of Tel Aviv.

Service In IDF And Invention Of Iron Dome

He joined the Israeli Air force service in 1983. During his service, Danny Gold has held several positions in electronics, munitions and electronic warfare.

He was appointed as head of the Israeli Directorate of Defense Research & Development (DDR&D) and as a Brigadier General in the Israel Defense Forces in 2016.

Among his various contributions, Danny is widely known for development of the Israel's Iron Dome air defence system.  For his work, he was conferred Israel Defense Prize in September 2012.

He coined the idea during his term as head of the Israeli Directorate of Defense Research & Development (DDR&D) from 2003 to 2010.

He completed his service in the IDF in 2014 and runs the company ‘Gold Technology and Entrepreneurship.’

His another notable work include the establishment of National Technological Center for Combatting the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 in collaboration with the Ministry of Defense, the defense industry, the local tech industry, the IDF, and academic institutions, in cooperation with the Ministry of Health, hospitals, the National Health Insurance, the Mossad, and other entities, to find solutions related to the virus in various fields.

In his interview to The Week, Danny Gold spoke about the idea of Iron Dome missile system and said, “In the late 1990s, I recognised the problem that missiles and rockets posed for Israel. I was head of the R&D unit in the Directorate of Defence Research & Development. I directed my team to explore options for developing a missile defence system. After the second Lebanon war, the government accepted our proposal for the Iron Dome.”

He is a well-known figure in Israel and is respected for his contribution in defense and technological sector. He was chosen to light the torch at Independence Day of Israel in 2015.
