Arvind Kejriwal Granted Interim Bail By Supreme Court

On Friday, the Supreme Court granted interim bail to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in the money laundering case linked to the alleged excise policy scam, acknowledging that the AAP leader had been incarcerated for 90 days. Despite this, Kejriwal will remain in Tihar Jail due to his arrest by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) concerning the same alleged scam.

A Supreme Court bench comprising Justices Sanjiv Khanna and Dipankar Datta referred Kejriwal's petition challenging his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to a larger bench. In its verdict, the Supreme Court emphasized that mere interrogation does not justify arrest.

'Considering the right to life and since the matter is referred to a larger bench, we order Arvind Kejriwal to be released on interim bail,' stated Justice Khanna.

The bench clarified that the larger bench could modify the decision on interim bail.

'Arvind Kejriwal has endured over 90 days of incarceration. As an elected leader, it is up to him to decide whether to continue in his role or not,' the court added.

Upon the Supreme Court granting interim bail to CM Arvind Kejriwal in the ED case related to the Excise Policy, Supreme Court lawyer Shadan Farasat, representing Kejriwal, commented, 'The Court noted certain aspects regarding the necessity of his arrest. They acknowledged that Mr. Kejriwal has already undergone a significant period of incarceration and thus ordered his immediate release and bail in the ED matter.'
