Bihar Witnesses Fourth Bridge Collapse In 10 Days; Latest Incident Involved 13-Year-Old Bridge

The series of bridge collapses in Bihar shows no signs of stopping. Another bridge has collapsed, causing widespread concern across the state. This is the fourth incident of bridge collapse in the past 10 days, following incidents in Araria, Siwan, and Motihari districts, now in Kishanganj district.

With the onset of monsoon, bridges over rivers and streams in Bihar are collapsing. On Thursday, a 13-year-old bridge in Kishanganj district collapsed. Constructed under the Chief Minister's Rural Road Scheme, this bridge was crucial for the commuting of around 40,000 people from surrounding villages. Submerged in floodwaters, the bridge collapse has severely affected the local community.

District officials have stated that there is a small tributary in the district, which connects the Kankai River to the Mahananda. In 2011, a 70-meter long and 12-meter wide bridge was constructed in Bahadurganj block to cross this tributary. Due to heavy rainfall, the water level in the river rose, causing one pillar of the bridge to collapse and submerging the entire bridge underwater.

Before this, a newly constructed bridge, 180 meters long, collapsed in Araria district. The bridge was built over the Bakra River in Sikti block, costing 12 crore rupees. Following this incident, a small seasonal bridge over a canal in Siwan collapsed. Subsequently, under construction, a bridge in the Ghodasahan block of Motihari collapsed, which was being built for two crore rupees.
