Venugopal emphasized that the 'bonding' between the Congress and the DMK remains strong. The Congress serves as the principal ally of the DMK in the Secular Progressive Alliance in Tamil Nadu. During the 2019 Lok Sabha elections in Tamil Nadu, the Congress contested nine out of 39 parliamentary seats, in addition to the lone seat in Puducherry. Out of these, it secured victory in eight seats in Tamil Nadu. Meanwhile, the DMK contested 20 seats and emerged victorious in all of them during that election year.
