Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday declined to comment on the Supreme Court’s appeal to doctors to end their strike over the rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Hospital. When asked, Rahul Gandhi responded, “Don’t distract me,” stating that he was there to address a Dalit-related issue and had already made a statement on the Kolkata incident. He emphasized his focus on raising concerns about the Dalit community.

Supreme Court Criticizes West Bengal Government

The Supreme Court, while condemning the brutal rape and murder of the trainee doctor, criticized the West Bengal government for its delay in filing an FIR. A bench led by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud took suo motu cognizance of the case and expressed concerns over the safety of doctors, noting that unsafe working conditions for women undermine equality.

BJP’s Response

Rahul Gandhi’s remarks triggered a swift response from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). National spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla questioned Gandhi’s stance, asking if “nyay (justice) for beti was a distraction.”
