Kallakurichi Hooch Tragedy: Death Toll Hits 47; Calls For CBI Probe Amid Assembly Disruption
A political controversy has erupted in Tamil Nadu following the deaths of 47 people in the Kallakurichi hooch tragedy. The families of the victims claim that illicit liquor was sold in prominent areas of the town. In response to the incident, Kallakurichi District Collector Sravankumar Jatavath has been replaced by MS Prashanth as the new Collector.
Following the consumption of adulterated liquor, 165 individuals were admitted to government hospitals in Kallakurichi, JIPMER, Salem, and Mundiambakkam as their health worsened.
The death toll has risen to 47, with the condition of at least 30 individuals reported as critical.
Three individuals affected have recovered, while 118 people are currently receiving treatment.

Prasanth M S, the District Collector of Kallakurichi, announced the formation of special teams to curb the illicit sale of arrack in the district.
During the Question Hour in the Tamil Nadu Assembly on Friday, AIADMK members attempted to bring up the issue and were subsequently removed in a group. However, the Speaker quickly revoked the ruling.
Demands CBI Enquiry
Chief Minister MK Stalin urged Speaker M Appavu to permit the participation of the main opposition members in the proceedings, a request which the Speaker promptly granted, instructing the AIADMK MLAs to return.

Justice Gokuldas, leading the single-member commission investigating the Kallakurichi hooch tragedy, visited the Kallakurichi government hospital to meet with the victims.
Authorities remanded Govindaraj, Damadoran, and Vijaya to 15 days of judicial custody and transferred them to Cuddalore Central Prison.
Tamil Nadu BJP chief K Annamalai has penned a letter to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, urging for a CBI investigation.
MK Stalin has declared compensation of ₹10 lakh each for the families of the deceased and ₹50,000 for those receiving treatment. Additionally, he has instructed an investigation by the Crime Branch, Crime Investigation Department (CB-CID).
