Lok Sabha 2024: Kerala Muslim Groups Urge Election Commission To Postpone Friday Polls

The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) and a Muslim group in Kerala have requested the Election Commission to delay the Lok Sabha elections slated for April 26. They argue that holding elections on Friday, a sacred day for the Muslim community, would inconvenience voters, election officials, and polling agents in Kerala.

Friday, known as Jumu'ah, is a day when Muslims gather in mosques. This could pose difficulty for voting in Kerala and Tamil Nadu. The matter has been raised with the Election Commission, he explained.

In addition to the IUML, Samastha Kerala Jamiyyathul Ulama, a prominent Muslim organization in Kerala, has voiced concerns about the challenges Friday polls could pose for voters and officials on duty, potentially impacting voter turnout.

"Jumu'ah is a worship that must be performed by the entire population of a region," stated Samastha Kerala in a released statement.

The organization's president, Syed Muhammad Jifri Muthukkoya, and General Secretary K Alikutty Musaliyar have written to the Central Election Commission urging the postponement of polling scheduled for April 26.

Earlier on Saturday, the Election Commission announced that the 2024 Lok Sabha elections will take place from April 19 to June 1 in seven phases, with results declared on June 4.
