Mangaluru Bus Driver Transforms Vehicle Into Emergency Ambulance, Rescues Passenger

In a remarkable display of compassion, a private bus in Mangaluru was transformed into an emergency vehicle on July 30 when a student showed signs of a heart attack. The bus, en route from Kunjathbail to Mangaladevi temple, sped six kilometers in just six minutes to reach the hospital.

The bus, operated by driver Gajendra Kundar and conductor Mahesh Poojary, was also accompanied by Suresh, another driver who was scheduled to take over. Around 3 pm, 10-15 students from Yenepoya University boarded the bus at Kuloor. When the bus reached Kottara Chowki, a female student seated near the front door complained of chest pain. As her fellow students helped her, Kundar, Poojary, and Suresh decided to rush the bus to the nearest hospital.

Ganjendra Kumar stayed calm under pressure and activated the bus's siren to reach the hospital swiftly. He drove the bus to Father Muller Medical College Hospital in Kankanady within six minutes without any stops. The bus was parked outside the Casualty block, bypassing safety protocols, but the hospital staff quickly moved the student inside. Thanks to the prompt actions of the bus driver, the student received timely medical attention. A video of the incident is now being shared online. Azia Parthapady, President of the Dakshina Kannada Bus Operators’ Association, praised the three crew members for their rapid response and ensuring the student received prompt care.

Driving at high speeds is generally risky, but in this instance, the driver's quick action was crucial in saving the student's life. The decision to use the siren to clear traffic demonstrated the driver's responsible approach and quick thinking in a critical situation.
