Odisha Woman Humiliated, Tonsured On Kangaroo Court's Order In Jharsuguda, Read Chilling Details
Bhubaneshwar: In a horrific and bizarre incident in Jharsuguda district of Odisha, a woman was allegedly tonsured and ostracised by a kangaroo court, following a quarrel with her husband. The woman was also asked to organize a feast for the villagers as a part of the punishment.
Confirming the incident, Dilip Kumar Behera, Officer in Charge of Laikera, said that it occurred earlier this month, and four people, including the woman's husband, were arrested on Sunday. He said that the woman and her husband had a quarrel over a minor issue on August 9. The husband accused his wife of accidently hitting him during the argument, deemed to be a 'serious offence' in their village. A kangaroo court was convened after the husband reported the incident to the village elders.
Kangaroo Court "Punishes" Woman
The kangaroo court allegedly awarded sentence to the woman and asked the villagers to tonsure her. She was also ostracised in the trial. The kangaroo court also asked the woman to pay a penalty of Rs 5,000 and directed her to organise a feast of mutton and rice for the villagers.
Accused Nabbed
Behera said that the woman and her son filed a complaint with the police, seeking legal action. It was also said in the police complaint that the woman was subjected to humiliation by those involved in the court. The police officer also said that three persons involved in the act, including the woman's husband, have been arrested. The three other accused, apart from the husband, are identified as Nabin Ping, Satrughan Kisan and Susanta Ping. The accused were indicted under various sections of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
