Three Die In Pune Electrocution Amidst Severe Rain; CM Shinde Mobilizes Armed Forces

Three electrocuted in Pune due to heavy rains; Maharashtra places Air Force, Army on alert, and schools closed amid ongoing downpours.

Pune: Three individuals were electrocuted in Pune’s Pulachi Wadi area near Deccan late Wednesday evening, authorities reported on Thursday. The victims, who were closing their egg bhurji stall, were killed by electric current transmitted through water caused by severe rainfall.

Emergency responders, including police and officials from the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL), arrived promptly at the scene. An investigation is underway to determine the precise cause of the electrocution.

In response to the ongoing severe weather, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has taken steps to address the situation. He announced that the Indian Air Force and Army have been placed on alert for potential flood relief operations in Pune and other affected areas. Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar is coordinating the response from Mantralaya.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast extremely heavy rainfall in isolated areas of Pune's ghat regions, with moderate rains expected in the plains through Friday. According to IMD data, the district has received 567.2 mm of rainfall from June 1 to July 24, 2024.

Given the persistent heavy rains and forecasted continued showers, the administration has declared a holiday for schools in Pune city, Pimpri Chinchwad, and the western parts of the district on July 25.

Rainfall data from the past 24 hours shows Lonavla received 300 mm, Lavasa 417 mm, and Junnar 214 mm. District Collector Suhas Diwase has ordered a holiday for all primary and secondary schools in Pune, Pimpri Chinchwad, Maval, Mulshi, Bhor Velha, Khed, Ambegaon, Junnar, and Haveli.
