Vinesh Phogat

Vinesh Phogat created history and  became the first Indian woman to reach the wrestling finals at the Olympics. She secured her medal in Paris by defeating Cuba's Lopez Guzman. In contrast to her previous match against a Japanese medal contender, Vinesh adopted a more aggressive approach from the beginning against Guzman. Despite being pressured early on, Guzman did not concede any points in the first two minutes. However, Guzman received a penalty for passivity at the two-minute mark, losing one point. From that point, Vinesh maintained her dominance and kept Guzman under control winning the match by 5-0.

Vinesh Phogat's Quarter-Final Victory

Vinesh Phogat defeated former European champion Oksana Livach in a closely-fought quarter-final with a score of 7-5. Vinesh took an early lead, maintaining it at 5-2 in the second round. The Ukrainian attacked, pushing Vinesh out of bounds to claim a point. Vinesh's challenge led to her conceding another point, reducing her lead to 5-4. In the final minute, Vinesh scored two more points to lead 7-4. Despite Oksana's late attacks, Vinesh defended well to win the match 7-5.

Historic Achievement

Vinesh has become the first Indian woman wrestler to qualify for the semi-final at the Olympics. While Sakshi Malik won a bronze at the 2016 Olympics, she did so via repechage after losing in the quarter-finals.
