Karnataka: Ignatius Orwin Noronha from Kottara, Mangalore, was driven by his mother's suffering from filariasis, a disease caused by mosquito bites, to develop a solution to combat mosquitoes. Witnessing her pain motivated him to invent a chemical-free mosquito-catching machine named Mozquit.

Affordable and Effective Mosquito Control

Inspired by the expensive Mosquito Magnet from the US, which costs around Rs 1.10 lakh with a maintenance cost of Rs 5,000 per month, Orwin aimed to create a more affordable option. The Mozquit, an electrically operated device made of plastic, is priced between Rs 1,250 and Rs 3,500, making it accessible to a wider audience. During manufacturing, a food-grade powder is integrated into the machine. When connected to electricity, the internal motor rotates, emitting light to attract mosquitoes.

The motor's fan then pulls the mosquitoes into a container where they are trapped and eventually die from dehydration and lack of food. Despite receiving praise from national and international organisations for its effectiveness in mosquito eradication, the application to incorporate Mozquit into the National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme has yet to receive a response.
